Forging Forward – 40 Years
March 17, 2025
This year marks a significant moment for Habitat for Humanity of Durham – 40 years of building, growing, and transforming our community. Looking back, it’s humbling to reflect on how far we’ve come since our beginnings in 1985 when Durham Congregations in Action laid the foundation of what would become a vital force for positive change. With a shared commitment to service and a belief in true partnership, we’ve helped nearly 500 families achieve the dream of homeownership.
The first home we built in 1987 on Angier Avenue marked the beginning of a long and fulfilling journey. Since then, we’ve continued to reach new heights—celebrating 100 homes in 2000, and now in 2025 we’re about to complete our 500th home.
Additionally, our Repairs Program, which was launched in 2010, has allowed us to extend our impact even further by providing essential repairs to hundreds of Durham families, ensuring they can stay in their homes and thrive. Our Homeowner Services team also continues to develop innovative ways to promote long-term success for our Habitat families, giving them the support they need for years to come.
This success isn’t possible without the dedication and passion of our team, volunteers, donors, and supporters. Each of you plays a crucial role in helping us realize this vision of a stronger, more equitable Durham.
As we celebrate 40 years of progress, we are more committed than ever to forging forward and building on our legacy while embracing new opportunities for growth, collaboration, and innovation.
Together, we will continue to build not only homes but also hope and opportunity for our neighbors. Thank you for being a part of this journey. Here’s to many more years of building a brighter future, side by side.
