Preserving Affordability
February 24, 2025

Verna’s parents bought their Durham home in the 1970s, a time when the odds were stacked against them. Despite facing significant challenges, they worked hard and managed to achieve the dream of homeownership. The home became more than just a place to live—it became a space where Verna and her siblings grew up, surrounded by love and countless happy memories.
After her parents passed away, Verna inherited the home, carrying with her the weight of their legacy and the memories they left behind. As a mother herself, Verna was determined to provide for her family, especially with one of her children facing medical issues that required ongoing care. Balancing work, family, and the upkeep of the house was no easy task, but Verna did it with determination and love.
However, when Verna was unexpectedly laid off from her job, things took a turn. Without a steady income, she found it increasingly difficult to afford the necessary maintenance on the house. The conditions began to deteriorate, and the environment became unhealthy—not just for her, but for her daughter as well. Fearing she might have to leave the only home she’d ever known, Verna faced a heartbreaking reality

That’s when Durham Habitat stepped in. Our Repairs team completed the necessary work to make the home functional and safe again. The Repairs team replaced her roof, repaired damage caused by water leaks, and improved accessibility for her daughter.
Thanks to supporters like you, families like Verna’s are able to stay in their homes, preserving Durham’s affordable housing stock. With the repairs complete, Verna is finally able to breathe a little easier. With your continued support, Durham Habitat can assist more Durham families, ensuring that the dream of homeownership remains within reach for neighbors who need it most.
